Vase of Peonies consists of 9 round plates combined with a still life of a vase with branches of pink and white peonies ans red gladioli.

The painting is an early work by Dutch artist Karel Wiggers (1916-1989).

Wiggers was educated at the Royal Academy in The Hague where his teachers included Sierk Schröder (1903-2002). Later he studied at the academy in Munich, where Constantin Gerhardinger (1888-1970) was one of his teachers. Despite living abroad, Wiggers lived and worked most of his life in his hometown. He was a member of the Sint Lucas artists' society in Amsterdam between 1944 and 1969 and of the Haagse Kunstkring and the Pulchri Studio painting society in The Hague between 1969 and 1977.
