Amsterdam based Studio DeSimoneWayland have been experimenting with the language of ceramic plates since 2010.
The history and forms of tableware is the starting point of their research, but it is the forms themselves, the various shapes,
and the combinations of them in complex compositions that constitute the base of their practice.
These shapes are seen as both canvas, and sculpture, and are combined with textiles as a way to add extra texture to them and enhance their sculptural qualities.
Their acclaimed series Altered Perspectives is a marriage between ceramic pieces and paintings on canvas, creating a three dimensional composition in which the image is fragmented onto the different shapes.
Other series include hand painted ceramics pieces, selecting sculptural shapes and covering them with images such as Delft inspired tulipières and pagodas, but also more modern themes.
The duo have been creating slip cast ceramics in both coloured stoneware, and porcelain for more than ten years, and taking the shapes to turn into sculptural pieces.
The series, From a Different Cloth and Soft Porcelain, showcase their signature textile structure layered on the ceramic. Some of the chosen textiles have monogram embroideries on them, adding an extra dimension to the pieces.
